5,000 farmers graduate from DA’s School-on-the-Air program


TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Aug. 28 (PIA) – – More than 5,000 farmers have successfully graduated  from the Department of Agriculture’s School-on-the-Air (SOA) on Climate Smart Agriculture in Cagayan Valley.

The mass graduation ceremony was held at the Isabela State University (ISU), Echague campus in  Echague, Isabela on August 24.

Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Francis Tolentino represented President Rodrigo Roa Duterte during the event. He lauded the effort of the agriculture department in continuously upgrading the capabilities of Filipino farmers to boost their productions.

He said teaching the latest technologies and sharing the technical know-how in farming are very essential in attaining the food sufficiency thrust of the government.

“I will  recommend to the President that same program shall also be replicated in other regions,” Tolentino said.

The farmers were enrolled in the SOA program which aired  April to June over government radio stations and community radios all over the Cagayan Valley region, including DA-operated radio station -DWDA and the government owned station – DWPE Radyo Pilipinas.

For his part, Regional Executive Director Narciso A. Edillo has expressed his gratitude to the graduates saying it was not an easy task to study and farm at the same time.

“Bilang ama ng agrikultura sa rehiyong ito, ako ay sumasaludo rin sa ating mga labingwalong partner agencies, lokal na pamahalaan, state universities and colleges at pribadong sektor sa matagumpay na SOA na mayroong target enrolees na sampung libo,” Edillo said.

According to Hector Tabbun, information officer at the DA R2 the farmers were taught latest farming trends,  climate change adaptation and mitigation, and rice production.

Tabbun added there were several partners in implementing the program  including the 18 government agencies and four State Universities and Colleges in the region.

During the event,  Marlon Edralin of Luna, Isabela was recognized as Outstanding Regional Top Awardee while Manuel Ubias Camalaniugan, Cagayan,) Luis Tasani (Cordon, Isabela), Celso Gabaon and Jesusa Gacusan (Diffun, Quirino) emerged as Outstanding Provincial Top Awardees.
