Abra re-strategizes to improve  nutritional status   

BANGUED, Abra, June 11(PIA)– With  the province still  having the highest prevalence of  malnutrition  in the Cordillera region,  the Provincial Nutrition Committee re-identified its objectives based on its Provincial Nutrition Action Plan (PNAP) to achieve  improvement of its nutritional status. 

In a meeting presided by Provincial Nutrition Action Officer-Designate Glenda B. Benedito, the committee identified key objectives. These  are  to improve the nutritional status of the four forms malnutrition among 0-59 months old by maintaining and decreasing trend; to sustain and increase percentage of exclusively breastfed children from 43.71% to 53% in 2019; to improve prevalence rate of micronutrient deficiencies of Vitamin A, Iron, and Iodine among 6-59 months old children and pregnant women and lactating mothers; to introduce and support nutrition promotion programs for behavioral change in schools and local communities; and to support disaster coordinating councils in providing services during emergencies.

Benedito said that these identified objectives would be evaluated for further improvement by the National Nutrition Committee-Cordillera upon their visit to the province next month.

PNC-Abra leads the overall implementation of nutrition programs of the government in all towns of the province.

The committee is composed of different national and provincial agencies such as, the office of the Governor, Provincial Health Office, Department of Health, Dept.  of Education, Dept.  of Agriculture ,Philippine Information Agency, Provincial Planning and Development Office, Provincial Budget Office, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, and Office of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
