DAVAO CITY Nov. 22 (PIA)- Barangay Mintal hopes to nourish cherry blossom tree-cuttings planted by a visiting group of Japanese last month.
Last October 18, about 30 Japanese visitors from Sakura Kaido, a non-government organization based in Osaka, Japan planted cuttings of Cherry Blossom trees or known as Sakura to honor the Japanese settlers in Davao during the pre-war era.
Mintal, in Davao City’s third district was the site of a prosperous Japanese community and was known as Little Tokyo before it was abandoned by the Japanese following its defeat during World War II.
Punong Barangay Rey Amador Bargamento said they would take care of the cherry blossoms seedlings even though the trees are known to flourish in colder climate. Aside from regularly watering the plants, they are also putting organic fertilizers.
Caretakers had noticed that leaves have sprouted from the cherry blossom cuttings raising hopes that the cuttings can survive and grow.
With the cuttings planted in the Mintal Park and Playground, Bargamento hopes to transform the area as a cherry blossom park and would draw tourists to the place.
The City Government hopes to transform Mintal into a Japanese heritage zone with facilities like museum, market and memorial to be established in the area. (PIA/RG Alama)
