City gov’t, DTI monitor prices of commodities

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Sept. 14 (PIA) – – The city government here and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are now conducting price monitoring of basic and prime commodities following the report of public “panic buying” in anticipation of the onslaught of typhoon “Ompong”.

City Mayor Jefferson Soriano said they need to watch over movements of prices of goods in the city to ensure that no business establishment will take advantage of the situation.

“We can use our police power to run after these business establishments that will be taking advantage of the situation. We should no longer experience what happened during the typhoon Lawin,” Soriano said referring to the leap in the prices of basic goods, construction materials and other commodities during the super typhoon Lawin in 2016.

On the other hand, Soriano said volunteers are now packing relief goods for ready distribution to affected families. The People’s Gymnasium and other identified evacuation centers are now prepared for evacuees.

“We also prepared heavy equipment to transport not only our constituents for evacuation but also some of their livestock just to encourage them to evacuate,” Soriano said.

The mayor has also called on Tuguegaraoenos to follow orders of rescue teams to evacuate before the weather will be coming worst. (OTB/PIA-Cagayan)
