DepEd officials urge stakeholders to join 'Brigada Eskwela' 2019

NAVAL, Biliran, May 19 (PIA) – Officials from the Department of Education (DepEd) in Biliran province is urging stakeholders to join this year’s “Brigada Eskwela” which will be held on May 20-25.

Josephine Casas, DepEd-Biliran education program supervisor, said “Brigada Eskwela,” also known as the National Schools Maintenance Week, is an annual program conducted by DepEd together with partners two weeks before the official start of classes.

“DepEd always sees to it that school facilities are all prepared before the classes start on June 3 with the help of all stakeholders in the community,” Casas said during the PIA Biliran’s Pulong-Pulong ng Bayan radio program on Thursday.

Casas said that this yearly activity in public schools is voluntary in nature – in terms of contributions, be it through labor, financial assistance or materials.

Together with Casas during the Pulong-Pulong ng Bayan radio program was Ryan Japay, officer-in-charge senior education program specialist, who also invited partners for the conduct of this year’s “Brigada Eskwela” to be with DepEd in this educational endeavor, adding that this activity is the modern concept of the Filipino trait — “bayanihan.”

Japay said, assessments were already conducted as early as January this year in all public elementary and secondary schools in the province in order to identify the needed repair works and other school’s improvement which can be done during the “Brigada Eskwela.”

DepEd also sees to it that June 3 is really a first day of class in all public elementary and secondary schools, and that teachers should have prepared already their lesson plans, he said.

Japay added, “The one-week school maintenance activitiy prior to the opening of classes is a big help in the regular school opening.”

Ryan Remandaban, senior education program specialist, said DepEd-Biliran has invited the provincial government, the eight municipal local government units, the 132 barangays, private partners, and most especially the parents of the students and pupils to participate in this year’s “Brigada Eskwela.”

Remandaban said the active participation of all the stakeholders in the community is a big factor in preparing the school facilities for the elementary and secondary learners in the province.

The “Brigada Eskwela” division kick-off in Biliran will be held on May 21 in Barangay Alegria, Caibiran while the regional kick-off will be held in the island municipality of Limasawa, Southern Leyte.

This year’s “Brigada Eskwela” is anchored on the theme, “Matatag na Bayan Para sa Maunlad na Paaralan.” (LDL/RSV/PIA-8, Biliran)
