ILOILO CITY, Sept. 19 (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH)-6 is scaling up the promotion of generic and affordable medicines.
Rayellen Magallon, DOH-6 Development Management Officer III, said that the promotion and use of generics is a core strategy of the DOH in assuring affordable access to essential medicines.
She said that in line with the observance of the Generics Awareness Month, which is anchored on the theme “Tatlong Dekada: Generics, Abot Kamay…Abot Kaya”, a Generics Summit will be conducted in the municipality of Tubungan on September 26, 2018.
“We will be focusing on the consumers to become proactive in choosing the most affordable medicines in accordance to their needs,” she said.
According to DOH-6, generic medicines refer to medicines that have the same active pharmaceutical ingredient as the innovator medicines and are not covered by patent protection.
Magallon said these medicines are labeled by their international nonproprietary or generics name and may or may not have brand names. (JBG/LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
