CAUAYAN CITY, Isabela Sept. 13 (PIA) – The National Irrigation Administration – Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (NIA-MARIS) will begin releasing water today at 2 PM in anticipation of the rainfall typhoon ‘Ompong’ will bring.
In its press release at 10 am today, the releasing of water from Magat Reservoir is to maintain the dam’s storage capacity because of the exected heavy rainfall. The water elevation is at 189.12 meters.
One of the dam’s spillway gates will be opened with 200 cubic meter second and it will increase from time to time based on the gravity of rainfall in the watershed.
This is a precautionary measure to prevent the accumulation of water, according to the flood forecasting and warning division.
Residents near Magat River have been advised to be on alert and to bring their large and small animals into higher grounds to prevent them from drowning.
Officials of NIA-MARIS said the releasing of water from the dam is being done when the rain gauge instruments from its watershed areas record volumes of rainfall.
Officials of the NIA-MARIS also advised the public to be ready at all times and be updated with typhoon Ompong by listening to radio or watching to televisions.(MDCT/PIA-2)
