DAGUPAN CITY, Oct. 8 (PIA) – More employment and economic boom are seen as mall giant SM opens its 74th mall in Dagupan City today.
Steven Tan, chief operating officer of SM Supermalls, said it is but logical to get employees from the immediate community where the mall is located.
“It makes logical sense to get our employees from the immediate community. Mas malapit at mas mabilis silang makapasok. When you enter a city, you also help the city by bringing in employment, taxes and all these things,” Tan said during the opening of the SM Center-Dagupan on Friday.
Tan said there are 200-300 employees of the mall but the 115 stalls have their own employees too, not to mention the security guards and utility workers that translate to a thousand employment for the mall.
Asked to differentiate an SM Center from an SM City, Tan said the latter is much bigger complete with a supermarket, department store and lots of cinemas.
The Center on the other hand, is a community mall that serves the immediate vicinity with a supermarket and restaurants for people to enjoy.
Hans Sy, chairman of the executive committee of SM Prime, said he is now more involved with disaster mitigation and resilience and has seen flooding as a problem in some areas of their store.
With this situation, Sy said his team has lifted the area of SM-Dagupan and put in rainwater collection tank for cooling power that uses recycled water.
He said this is part of SM standard even if it is not required.
“We made sure this is protected. We cannot think only of ourselves but also of our tenants who are stakeholders and we want to make sure they won’t suffer any problem,” Sy said.
“We cannot stop disasters from happening but we can mitigate these and suffer less losses,” he added.
Also present during the opening of SM Dagupan were Pangasinan 4th District Representative Christopher De Venecia, Vice-Governor Mark Lambino, who represented Gov. Amado Espino III, and Dagupan City Acting Mayor Bryan Kua, who represented Mayor Brian Lim.
A mass was earlier celebrated by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.
