President Duterte condoles with families of sea tragedy victims


ILOILO CITY, Aug. 7 (PIA6) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday personally condoled with the families of some casualties of the recent sea mishap at Iloilo Strait.

Duterte arrived at Gegato-Abecia Funeral Homes in Jaro, Iloilo City to visit the wake of the 13 victims who perished after three motor bancas capsized off the Iloilo Strait on August 3.

The President was also supposed to head to Guimaras to visit the wake of the other victims from the island-province, however, the inclement weather prevented him from doing so.

During the wake visit, he was able to meet and talk to the survivors of the sea tragedy.

The President also extended financial assistance in the amount of P50,000 and mobile phone to the each of survivors and the families of the victims.

Maria Nieves Grandeza, a survivor from Guimaras, was able to speak with the President and shared her story of the sea incident.

The sea tragedy took the lives of Grandeza’s long-time partner Romeo Baguio, Jr. and their son Jay Arvien.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-6 assured that the survivors and the families of the victims will be provided with financial assistance from the agency.

DSWD-6 Assistant Regional Director Evangeline Felicio said that each of the survivor will get P10,000 financial assistance, while the families of the casualties will receive P20,000 burial assistance.

She added that they will also provide psycho-social intervention to the survivors and the families of the victims, in collaboration with the Department of Health-6. (LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
