ORMOC CITY, July 6 (PIA) — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Friday led the inauguration of the Ormoc Airport Development Project located in Barangay Airport in this city.
The project includes the P34 million rehabilitation of the passenger terminal building, expanding its area from 150 square meters to 1,350 square meters to accommodate more passengers; the completed P82-M asphalt overlay of the airport’s 2,042m x 36m runway and strip grade correction; and the P55-M runway widening which is expected to be completed by 2020.
The rehabilitation project, which was completed only in four months, began in 2018 after the damage made by super typhoon Yolanda in 2013 and the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in 2017.
The 37.5-hectare airport classified as Principal Class 2 by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) catered to 1,267 passengers from Air Juan and Cebu Pacific and accommodated 80,244 aircraft operations, including general aviation in 2018.
President Duterte said he will finish also the airport development in Southern Leyte and all other airports in the country before the end of his term.
Meanwhile, Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez thanked the present administration for the realization of the airport development project which he believes will continue to propel the city’s progress.
The government is actively pushing for developments in Ormoc to help boost not only the city’s but also Leyte’s trade, economy and tourism.
The President unveiled the airport’s marker together with Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, Secretary Arthur Tugade of the Department of Transportation, Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas, Director-General Jim Sydiongco of CAAP, Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez of the 4th District of Leyte, Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez of the 1st District of Leyte, and Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez.
After the brief stay of President Duterte in the inauguration of the airport, he proceeded to Alang-Alang, Leyte for the inauguration of the Chen Yi Agventures Rice Processing Center. (LDL/RSV/PIA-8)
