RDRRMC holds ‘school-based resilience caravan’ at ZSSAT

PAGADIAN CITY, July 24 (PIA) –In observance of the National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) this July, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC-9) conducted a school-based resilience caravan on Monday at Zamboanga del Sur School of Arts and Trade (ZSSAT),  barangay Kawit here.

Formerly the National Disaster Consciousness Month, it was changed to NDRM through Executive Order No.29 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte on June 28, 2017.

The caravan is one of the highlights in the annual observance of the NDRM  which carries the theme “Kahandaan sa Sakuna’t Peligro Para sa Tunay na Pagbabago.”

Girly Gamier of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD-9)  said during the event, the RDRRMC’s partner government agencies engaged in disaster preparedness and mitigation installed booths at the school gymnasium to display their information, education and communication (IEC) materials and equipment.

Senior high school students were oriented on their  respective programs, projects and services, demonstration on their disaster management, safety and  rescue equipment and their capacities on how they would respond to disasters, as well as create awareness and preparedness for whatever calamity that may hit the city.

Gamier said disaster education should be shared to the students and encourage them to promote it to their respective families in order to achieve a disaster-safe society.

Augusto T. Gavenia, school principal,  was grateful to the RDRRMC for choosing their school as the venue of the school-based resilience caravan, adding that the activity has provided the students  ample knowledge on disaster risk reduction.

The students of ZSSAT are in extreme risk of natural disasters since the school is located in the coastal barangay of Kawit.

The RDRRMC believes that resilience, safety and protection of the community can be achieved through the active support, cooperation and  readiness of the public to help each other especially in times of disasters. (ALT/GCC/PIA-Zamboanga del Sur)
