TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Dec. 12 (PIA) – Senator Cynthia Villar expressed her continued support to the development of the dairy industry in the country during her recent visit in the province recently to grace the 5th Cagayan Valley Dairy Business Conference and Stakeholder’s Forum as the guest of honor and speaker.
In her message, she said being the chair of the Committee on Agriculture & Food, she has been working hard towards further developing the said agricultural sub-sectors since livestock and dairy together with poultry make up one-third or 33 percent of Philippine agriculture.
“Among those sub-sectors, it is really the dairy industry, where we urgently need to make an improvement, particularly in increasing local dairy production, our dairy producers meet only one percent of the demand for milk and other dairy products” she said. The 99 percent are sources from abroad.
Villar said she is promoting the involvement of smallholder dairy farmers in various feeding and nutrition programs of the government such as those initiated by the Department of Education (DepEd), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of Agriculture (DA), and other agencies.
“Dairy products of the Philippine Carabao Center and farmer communities engaged in carabao-based enterprises are used in DSWD’s milk-feeding program,” she added.
In the “Pagkaing Pinoy Para Sa Batang Pinoy Act”, Villar said she proposed for the insertion of a new section mandating the use of locally-produced milk in the proposed National School Feeding Program, in collaboration with the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) and the National Dairy Authority.
The proposal, according to Villar, encourage the use of locally-produced milk in cycle menu and recipes, such as milk-based soups, breads and viands in order to increase livelihood opportunities of dairy farmers and boost the local dairy industry.
She lauded the efforts of the dairy stakeholders of Region 2 to include the DA, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), state universities and colleges (SUCs), the Cagayan Valley Federation of Dairy Cooperatives, and the PCC for their performance.
The senator is eyeing for other towns or regions to have their own share if only to achieve at least 30 to 50 percent of our dairy requirement as the guest of honor and speaker. (MDCT/GVB/With reports from DA Rehiyon Dos/PIA 2-Cagayan)
